The Hour of Truth

  1. At this point in the book I was wanting to cry and help so bad because of all the things that the police were doing to Alba. They stripped her, beat her, and just tortured the heck out of her! I couldn't believe the insanity of these people! It was like reading a book of the Holocaust and these torturous villains were Hitler's minions (and Alba and all the rest of the prisoners in this example would be Jews...). And then at the end I feel so sorry for Senator Trueba because Alba is his life now and the police are killing him by abusing her! He gets down on his hands and knees and begs Transito Soto, a very high powered woman with the new government, to help him find his grandaughter and help him to get her back. I didn't really know he had as much emotion in him!

  2. So let's discuss more this relationship of Transito and Esteban...

  3. At first I wasn't sure what to make of the relationship Esteban created with Transito. However, as the story concludes I begin to see the deep friendship they share with each other. I thought the relation of their characteristics was interesting as well. Transito seems to be an intelligent businesswoman, although owning a brothel, who loves to help others as long as they help her in return, or where her honor is involved, such as with the debt she owes to Esteban. She doesn't even seem to think about a possible romantic relationship between her and Esteban. She seems to be a practical realist, which is how she is able to help others, not out of charity or kindness.

  4. I believe Esteban was good to Transito because she always listened to his problems and understood him. She never once criticized him for what he had done or was planning on doing. "Esteban Trueba liked her because she was not squeamish about new ideas and the brutalities of love, sand with the voice of a hoarse bird, and had once told him she was to go far in life and he found that amusing." (p.69) So basically, Esteban saw Soto as a brave, and very strong woman with great ambitions who believed she could aspire in the world which Esteban found amusing. He enjoyed spending time with her because she made him laugh. (p.69) By lending Transito the money she required to succeed in the world, Esteban not only earned her respect, but he also earned her trust and friendship. It is that trust, and respect that kept them friends over the years and formed their deep relationship. Without those 50 pesos Transito would be nothing, which is why she didn't hesitate to find Alba when Trueba asked. I don't think he would even had to beg.

  5. I believe that Esteban was good to Transito for some similar and different reasons. From the beginning he could see that she had an eye for ambition much like himself only hers were much more amusing to him. Later on, when he was married to Clara and gave her a visit he was suprised as to how different she was from his wife. Where he normally had to be careful with his delicate wife he had no boundries with Transito. She would always turn up in his life when he least expected it which left him feeling more graditude to her than he would have ever imagined. I think it is clever how Isabel used her throughout the story tieing in the little details. I had thought that Alba was going to die but Transito ended up being the little ray of hope that eveyone needed.

  6. In this chapter Esteban Garcia has finally achieved his revenge through the torture of Trueba's granddaughter Alba. This is what Garcia had been waiting for his whole life, to avenge his mother's rape and humiliation and his own animosity towards the person who made him an illegitamate son and refused to have anything to do with him much less be his father. Trueba is devastated beyond reason as he searches for his Alba and Garcia continues to torture him by sending Alba's chopped fingers in the mail.

Garcia may have gotten his revenge, but as Alba later realizes revenge can never be attained for it continues in a never-ending circle of pain and destruction.

  7. Esteban was good to Transito because she actually had a head on her shoulders, knew what she wanted, and wasn't afraid to ask for some help. By having Transito he could have his cake and eat it to, so to speak. He could have the mild mannered wife which looked good for political reasons, and by night have his saucy realtionship with Transito. But I also think it goes further than that. Transito could kind of read Esteban Trueba's thoughts, she knew what he was going through and understood his pain. Esteban finally found someone who knew how to comfort him and make him feel better, while on the other hand, Clara was too wrapped up in her own spirits and mind that she couldn't possibly be concerned with the hot headed Trueba's cares or worries. This balance of the women in his life made things easier for Trueba, and even ended up helping him save the only woman left to care about (Alba).
